Back to Back Niigata Major Overhauls for Sister Vessels
Royston Australia were engaged to conduct Niigata 6L28HX main engine overhauls, Hitachi Nico HLP80Y clutch overhauls, shaft bearing inspections and Geislinger coupling inspections back to back on two identical 65 tonne tug boats.
Workscope
The sizeable project included the 24,000 hour overhaul of the main engines, stripping the main clutches and carrying out shaft inspections. Components were removed and brought to our facility in Henderson for overhaul before returning to the vessel and being reinstalled.
During the overhauls it was discovered there was damage to the cylinder head valves and even after reconditioning, the valves were over the maximum allowable specifications, so valves were replaced which was a small variation to the scope.
Result
The vessels underwent successful sea trials, where we ran through alarms, shutdowns and finetuned engines, gearbox and clutches.
